Web Specialist pitch

Part I — Design challenge

Overview

Please redesign the home page of a Louisianna-based design-build company. The goal is to elevate the look and feel, establish a consistent modern design language, and create a more strategic user experience that supports the company’s mission and values, while also considering their competitors and their websites. Your task is to deliver a Squarespace mockup of a proposed homepage design.

About the Client

Kent Design Build is a Louisiana-based construction company specializing in design-build services. They serve a wide range of markets—including healthcare, education, and commercial—and are known for their collaborative approach, quality craftsmanship, and commitment to delivering on time and on budget. Their tagline: “We Build Better Together.”

Design Goals

  1. Modernize the Design Language
The current homepage feels functional but dated. The client is ready for a more refined, modern aesthetic that reflects their quality and professionalism and competing with other companies in their industry.

  2. Establish Global Styles with Custom CSS
Apply global CSS styles to enhance the typography, buttons, and layout of native Squarespace elements. These styles should reflect the design system you’ve created and support consistency across the entire homepage. Focus on usability, brand alignment, and visual polish.

  3. Clarify Services and Expertise
Visitors should quickly understand what Kent Design Build offers and what sets them apart.

  4. Video Content
The video that lives on their current home page must be incorporated in the new design.

  5. Highlight Key Elements

    • Showcase featured projects

    • Encourage new client inquiries

    • Attract prospective talent to explore careers

  6. Responsive Design Thinking
Layout should reflect responsiveness or demonstrate mobile-friendly thinking.

Part II — Development challenge

Overview

As a continuation of the homepage redesign, this next phase invites you to create a custom-coded section that complements the visual and structural direction established in Part I. The goal is to build a flexible, engaging content block that enhances the user experience and reinforces Kent Design Build’s brand presence.

Using a standard Squarespace code block, develop a fully responsive HTML/CSS section that includes the following core elements:

  • An image

  • A heading

  • A button

  • A subtle hover animation

JavaScript is optional and can be included for added interactivity if needed. This section should feel integrated and intentional—not just an isolated call-to-action, but a custom feature that helps round out the homepage story. Whether used to encourage engagement, highlight services, or introduce a key message, the design should feel purposeful and polished.

Development Goals

  1. Create a Visual Highlight
This section should be a strong visual moment that captures the user’s attention without dominating the overall page flow.

  2. Incorporate Interaction
Include hover effects or transitions that draw users in, creating a sense of interactivity. This can be applied to the image, button, or overall section, and should align with the tone and pace of the site.

  3. Stay On-Brand
Typography, colors, and layout should match the design system established in Part I. This section should feel like a natural extension of the homepage rather than an outlier.

  4. Build Responsively
Your code should be clean and adaptive, with breakpoints and interactions that account for desktop, tablet, and mobile views. Ensure the section remains functional and aesthetically consistent across screen sizes.
